Africa 50 - photos by Tom PointonOne of the visitors to Contact exhibition this week has been Tom Pointon. Tom came along and told us about an exciting new exhibition to mark the 50 years since seventeen African Nations emerged from colonial rule. There’s an exhibition and installation running at Birmingham Central Library Art Gallery, Gallery 33/36 Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery during September.

From 20-28 November it moves to the Gathering Space in Wolverhampton, then during December you can see it at the Friary Gallery at Lichfield Library.

Contact – an exhibition at Rhubarb East

Category: Photospace,exhibition,photographers,photographyLiz Garlinge @ 21:00

We’ve been quiet on here. I admit it. I’ve even had emails about it…(thanks to those of you who got in touch!)

We’ve been putting all our energy recently into creating a new show in partnership with a very talented group of photographers from around the Midlands, called The Photography Collective.

We’re now at that stage where we want to talk about the exhibition. We’re actually very excited about it – given that it’s an associate show of the recent Rhubarb-Rhubarb International Photography and it’s another opportunity to show the wealth of talent we have in the Midlands, and prove again how much need and support there is for a permanent space for photography in Birmingham.

We have a new website for lots more details about the show, and a blog which talks a bit about our journey to get there. I’ll post more details on here in due course – but the new website is shiny, and you should go and have a look!

The exhibition was inspired by discussions within the group on the nature of contact, with each of the photographers creating work within their own practice exploring their thoughts on the theme. The variety of styles and formats challenges the viewer to consider how contact is made between objects both animate and inanimate, between the past and present, between analogue and digital and between photographer and subject.

The show is curated by Kathryn Klizsat, the accomplished curator at Light House – the centre for film, video, art and photography in Wolverhampton. Kathryn has put the show together from a larger body of work from emerging talent and established photographers from across the two groups. The result is a diverse and exciting new body of work seen for the first time here in Birmingham.

Come along - September 3rd to September 18th 2010 – 11am -5.30, Rhubarb East, Custard Factory, Birmingham.

I’m a photographer, not a terrorist.

Category: Birmingham,exhibition,photographers,photographyLiz Garlinge @ 21:22

Another show in Birmingham next Friday – 25th June 2010 – the C&G 7512 Diploma in Professional Photo Imaging – Adult learners end of year show.

For one night only, it seems, the Masonic Halls (next to the Mailbox) will be turned into an exhibition celebrating the work of the graduates of this diploma – one of the only courses of this type for adult learners in the city.

The exhibition, entitled “I am a photographer, not a terrorist” is based on the students’ experiences and reactions from trying to take images in public places and the effects on their work of Section 44 of the Terrorism Act.

With a print auction offering the chance to own some great work by talented professional photographers, and a raffle with some prizes on offer it’s set to be more entertaining than your average private view!

For more information on the show see their website.

Birmingham’s People

Lots of people have asked us about our plans for Artsfest so we thought it was high time we documented them.  It’s going to be a great weekend – and we hope that you’ll come along and be part of it.

CONCEPT – what’s it about?

Inspired by the likes of Richard Avedon’s The Family (a series of 69 photos taken of ‘the establishment’ in the US in 1976) and Obama’s People (a series of portraits by Nadav Kandler currently showing in Birmingham), we wanted to take a look at Birmingham’s people and how they see each other. We plan to take a series of portraits over the course of the Artsfest weekend involving the sitters in portraits of their fellow citizens.

HOW?

The good folks at Artsfest have given us some prime locations for setting up our portrait studio and for displaying our prints.  We will have a marquee just off Victoria Square where we will be making the portraits, and some room in Paradise Forum to display portraits – like with Flashswap, we’ll be creating a Photospace over the weekend.

Calumet have kindly agreed to support us during the weekend, so we’ll be using some of their professional kit, and together with our small team of talented photographers we’ll be inviting people enjoying Artsfest to come in, have their portraits taken and talk to us about themselves and photography.

We’d also like the subjects of our photos to take part in the creative process – by doing some art direction of the next subject in line.

ART DIRECTION – sounds complex?

Here’s an example of how it’ll work.  Say Liz comes in to have her portrait taken.  Once she’s had her image taken, she’ll be invited to suggest how she may like Matt (who is next in line) to pose. (She may ask him to smile, to frown, to stand or slouch, to display the object he bought earlier from Artsfest. She’s limited only by her imagination (and the laws of decency!))  The photographer will take a few frames, and then Liz will get to choose which one she would like to exhibit.

EXHIBIT, you say?

Yes – we’ll be having our photos processed in batches, then our creative curators will be hanging them in Paradise Forum so we create a Photospace for Birmingham for the duration of the festival.

We’re also planning a major exhibition at The Drum later in the year – so after the event we’ll be selecting, printing and framing the portraits, then devising an exhibition.  We’ll be displaying some of the interviews too, as part of the exhibition.

INTERVIEWS?

Didn’t I mention the interviews?  Oh dear.  We’re hoping to interview subjects during the day, making short video clips and some short audio interviews for later transcription.

HOW CAN I HELP?

Are you a organisation who could sponsor us?  We have one sponsor already, but we need more.  Could you offer us free or discounted photo printing?  Could you help us with promotional materials? – as ever, we’ll be trying to raise understanding of our aims – that is to build a world class venue for photography in Birmingham.  We need badges and postcards and other promo things.

Are you a photographer or a supporter of Photospace (or both!)?

We need creative, committed, hardworking folk who work well as part of a team to help us with the following tasks:

  • Curation of portrait photospace in Paradise Forum
  • Production of images – working with our suppliers to deliver high quality portrait images from digital files
  • Photoshop operators – making our images look as good as they can
  • Interviewing – taking video or making audio interviews of the subjects of the portraits
  • Reception and marketing – meeting and greeting – handing out promo material – discussing photospace- inviting people to sign up to mailing list
  • Orderbook – our subjects may wish to purchase their portraits – this role takes money and records details so we can send portraits out

We need volunteers for the whole weekend.  We’d be grateful if you would commit for one whole day please.

In return we can offer you a great day out, lots of fun, the knowledge that you’re supporting the arts in our great city and a drink (probably!).

SoFoBoMo 2009

Category: photo blogs,photographyMatt Murtagh @ 12:31

Some of you may have heard of NaNoWriMo, the now ten years old (inter) National Novel Writing Month in which prospective authors attempt to write a novel in one month. Last year they had over 100,000 participants with over 15,000 completed books.

It’s a great idea and has spawned both NaSoAlMo, the National Solo Album Month, and, most recently, the photography focused SoFoBoMo – the Solo Photo Book Month. In 2008 170 photographers from round the world signed up and 60 created a finished book.

Books consist of  a series of 35 photos taken in a ‘fuzzy’ month, a 31 day period between the dates of 1st May and 30th June. The series can be about any subject whatsoever and you don’t need any more equipment than a camera (of any kind!). Books can be created in a physical format or purely as a PDF on the web. The completed books have a wonderful variety to them and are worth a look at even if you don’t want to have a go at it yourself. There is also a community of blogs that have built up around people documenting their projects.

As an exercise in photography creating a carefully crafted series of images is a challenge that can invigorate your photography, a series creating more depth than any individual image can. It can also help you learn new skills, PDF creation being something of an art in itself. Many fantastic photographers signature works are their books, for inspiration try Robert Frank’s The Americans, Eugene Atget’s Photographe de Paris or Egglestone’s William Eggleston’s Guide

So far there are 597 photographers signed up to take part in 2009 worldwide but only one from the West Midlands (and that’s me!). There’s a great essay here on why you should get involved. If you’re interested sign up here and then comment on this post with your ideas for great books. If we get enough interest I’m sure we’ll be able to sort out an exhibition for the finished pieces, at the very least we’ll feature them on this site.
