I’m a photographer, not a terrorist.

Another show in Birmingham next Friday – 25th June 2010 – the C&G 7512 Diploma in Professional Photo Imaging – Adult learners end of year show.

For one night only, it seems, the Masonic Halls (next to the Mailbox) will be turned into an exhibition celebrating the work of the graduates of this diploma – one of the only courses of this type for adult learners in the city.

The exhibition, entitled “I am a photographer, not a terrorist” is based on the students’ experiences and reactions from trying to take images in public places and the effects on their work of Section 44 of the Terrorism Act.

With a print auction offering the chance to own some great work by talented professional photographers, and a raffle with some prizes on offer it’s set to be more entertaining than your average private view!

For more information on the show see their website.

Photos of the Private view

Birmingham's people

So, the exhibition has settled in nicely in its new home, at Bryant Priest Newman, and we’re busy planning on our events for 2010. It seems like a good time to show you the amazing and wonderful photos our friend Ian James took of the private view at The Drum.

For a group who got together following a post on a Flickr messageboard, it seemed strange that we didn’t have a Flickr account of our own, so we’ve set one up, and you can see Ian’s photos there. There are some wonderful shots in the collection- so many, many thanks to Ian who came along as a volunteer to record the night. As ever, we’re inspired by the talent and generosity of people in the city – makes us even keener to get our permanent space for photographers!

Birmingham’s People 11 – Afribeanne

Category: Birmingham,Portraiture,birmingham's peopleMatt Murtagh @ 12:19

Afribeanne (on the right in the portrait) is a resident of Brixton and was visiting Birmingham during the Artsfest weekend.

An art student, she had some great insights into the unique nature of photography and the importance of it being part of the community as you can see in the video interview below.

She also had some incredibly positive things to say about the second city, especially its shops!

She was great fun to work with too, picking this relaxed, fun shot rather than a more formal portrait.

Category: Flickr,photographers,photographyEmma Jones @ 22:47

Flickr logoThe next Birmingham Flickrmeet is in Lichfield at 2:10pm on Sunday May 10th 2009. Meet at Lichfield City Train Station (the 13:35 Cross City Train from New St arrives at 14:10).

All are welcome to Flickrmeets – as the group description says:
“Flickrmeets are all inclusive: film, digital, SLR, compact, toycamera, TTV, vintage… whatever you shoot you’ll be more than welcome!”

We can vouch for the fact that the Birmingham Flickr group is very friendly – if you’ve never been to one before, just look out for a group of people with cameras!
