I was involved in trying to establish a photo gallery/workshop/bookshop space in Birmingham in the early eighties (we had the option on a lease on a property in Broad St) but alas the Arts Council lost its nerve when it came to funding a new venture with no established track record, so it ended up as a three way split funded by Aston University, WMA and ACGB as the Triangle Gallery, and was thus doomed to failure as political agendas soon took over.
I also organised shows and workshops in and around the region, and tried to get as much coverage in both local press and national magazines, and that helped to raise our profile.
I wish you all every success, and hope you folk can make it happen this time around – Birmingham still deserves and needs a photo gallery.

We are thinking of visiting Birmingham and my husband is a keen photographer. We are coming over from Italy. A permanent photography venue in Birmingham would certainly tip the balance to visit your city. Is Birmingham photospace open in August and are there any exhibitions on? Thank you for your attention and best wishes for the summer.
