Birmingham’s People 35 – Lihnguyen

These two couldn’t stop laughing for the whole time they were being photographed, we did a couple of straight portraits but this one stood out.

The best images all come when everybody involved is enjoying themselves!

Birmingham’s People 34 – Burchell

This is Andrew who provided a real outsiders view on Birmingham, He’d been out of the country for fifteen years and his initial impressions of the ‘new’ Brum were not completely positive. Watch our interview with him in the video clip below. Birmingham’s People: Andrew from Birmingham Photospace on Vimeo.

Birmingham’s People 33 – Marrakhi

Category: PhotospaceMatt Murtagh @ 01:15

There’s a surly confidence to this portrait that I love.

One of the hardest jobs for a portrait photographer is to get beneath the  smiley ‘photo face’ that people naturally pull if a camera is placed in front of them.

Marrakhi’s eyes completely own this image, there’s an acknowledgement in them that a portrait is a collaboration between photographer and sitter based on mutual respect.

Birmingham’s People 30 – Jessica

Again a young woman that embodies Birmingham and fashion.

The image has a quirkiness and playfulness about it. Does this represent the sitter?

Birmingham’s People 29 – Haughton

This is strong for me at two levels – it represents Birmingham a
mixture of cultures living well together but also it represents me as
a one part of a mixed marriage.

What strength this gives to Birmingham.

Birmingham’s People 28 – Lette

This image to my mind is very strong, the camera being turned back
onto the photographer.

The sitter, looking upwards, perhaps momentarily, from his camera, fills the image – as he is taken at an angle.

Wonderful shot.

This shot was taken by the very talented Jennifer Peel while Matt was on his lunch.

This young woman had a cheeky and lively air to her. Obviously fashion
conscious.

The image captures her to a tee.

Birmingham’s people 26 -Face painting fun

Category: PhotospaceLiz Garlinge @ 09:30

Many of the children walking past the tent over the artsfest had been made over as creatures great and small, from gruffaloes (you’ll have seen a photo of one of her canvasses earlier in the blog) to butterflies. This lady and her friends were responsible for facepainting dozens of children over the weekend. She told me the kids were queuing out the door to wait for her talents.

The reason I love this photo though is because of this lady’s smile. There is something so open and friendly about her face. I know nothing about her – we had a five minute chat on the day – but her warmth just radiates out of this photo. It’s something magical to capture in a photo I think – and I’m in awe of what our photographers were able to achieve over the weekend.
