Exhibition – Fri 27 Mar – Fri 15 May

To coincide with Michelle Sank’s exhibition at Light House, Wolverhampton she will be giving a fascinating insight about her photographic portrait work on teenage identity to date at this double exhibition opening. She is showing a special selection from Young Carers and Teenagers Belfast at Light House from Fri 27 Mar – Fri 15 May. She has also undertaken a new commission for Wolverhampton Art Gallery, entitled Interface, showing in their brand new gallery space until Sat 2 May. Young Carers features young people under the age of 18 who are the main carers for a sick parent or sibling. Photographed away from the demands of their home life they retain, for that moment, the freedom of childhood.

Teenagers Belfast aims to empower local teens with individuality, bearing no reference to the political struggles of the area.

Category: Uncategorizedadmin @ 15:25

Linhof has been actively engaged in supporting the projects of younger people for many decades and is now inviting entries for their bi-annual competition for the best images of younger photographers preferably taken with large format cameras systems.

The judging will take place in April 2009 by a select jury of experts in the photographic world to determine the 3 best entries. The topic of the subject matter is the urban environment. The theme of the competition is “Human Cityscapes”. The photographic realisation should comprise the urban environment “City” showing contrasts or unity of citizensand architecture.
The role of the human being within the urban architecture is the idea. Linhof expects a conceptional work relating to the theme with probably new personal reflections.
The Linhof Award for Young Photography is based on the fine art aesthetic principles of large format photography.

Birmingham Photospace Press Release: Flash Swap Exhibition

Category: Uncategorizedadmin @ 17:48

We want your images. See below for the our press release.

Birmingham Photospace Press Release

Local photographers are being invited to exhibit and swap their work for free at Birmingham’s Custard Factory.

Birmingham Photospace, a voluntary group dedicated to finding a permanent space for photography in the city, is hosting ‘Flash Swap’ – an event on Saturday 21st March at the Custard Factory’s Vaad Gallery for photographers of all levels to showcase their work for free.

The event will allow people to be part of a ‘swap session’, where they can take home their favourite image from the exhibition, providing that they have left one of their own prints in exchange. This picture exchange will give people the chance to meet fellow photographers over a drink and to display their artwork, but is also intended to raise awareness of the organisers’ long-term goal: to establish a permanent photography gallery in Birmingham.

It is the group’s first event in the city, and will take place on Saturday, 21st March with submissions accepted from 11.00am – 4pm and viewing and swap session from 5pm – 8pm at the Custard Factory’s Vaad Art Gallery in Digbeth.

Liz Garlinge, of Birmingham Photospace, said: “We’re hoping that all types of photographers from the city will bring along their work.

It’s an exhibition for everyone, regardless of whether they are professional, semi-pro or just an enthusiast. There’s a place for every image providing it fits through the door.

The photographs can be about any subject – it’s a chance for people to showcase work that they are proud of, in whatever form that takes.

The ‘swaps’ at the event will hopefully help people to generate interest in their work. People can bring an image they are willing to let someone else take home – and then go and pick a photograph they like for themselves. That way everyone will go away with the best of Birmingham’s images!”

Birmingham Photospace originated from the global photo sharing website Flickr, where over 1,200 members have registered an interest in the city’s photography. The group, which is organised by volunteers, hopes to attract funding to gain support for a dedicated, not-for-profit space for photographers.

To express an interest in exhibiting or attending, email patrick@birminghamphotospace.co.uk or visit the group’s blog at www.birminghamphotospace.co.uk

Lake District by Night

Most people are familair with the beautiful and dramatic landscapes of the Lake District through photographic images, all taken during the day. Henry Iddon set out in 2006 to portray a different perspective of the national park, taking photographs only at night when most of its population is safely tucked up in bed. His work is inspired by the romantic poets Wordsworth and Coleridge, and he deliberately sets out to capture the peace and remoteness of their vision.

‘Spots of Time’ is currently showing at the Three White Walls gallery in the Mailbox, Birmingham until 2 March and you can also see Henry’s work on his website which includes an interactive map showing all the locations used.
