Contact – an exhibition at Rhubarb East

Category: Photospace,exhibition,photographers,photographyLiz Garlinge @ 21:00

We’ve been quiet on here. I admit it. I’ve even had emails about it…(thanks to those of you who got in touch!)

We’ve been putting all our energy recently into creating a new show in partnership with a very talented group of photographers from around the Midlands, called The Photography Collective.

We’re now at that stage where we want to talk about the exhibition. We’re actually very excited about it – given that it’s an associate show of the recent Rhubarb-Rhubarb International Photography and it’s another opportunity to show the wealth of talent we have in the Midlands, and prove again how much need and support there is for a permanent space for photography in Birmingham.

We have a new website for lots more details about the show, and a blog which talks a bit about our journey to get there. I’ll post more details on here in due course – but the new website is shiny, and you should go and have a look!

The exhibition was inspired by discussions within the group on the nature of contact, with each of the photographers creating work within their own practice exploring their thoughts on the theme. The variety of styles and formats challenges the viewer to consider how contact is made between objects both animate and inanimate, between the past and present, between analogue and digital and between photographer and subject.

The show is curated by Kathryn Klizsat, the accomplished curator at Light House – the centre for film, video, art and photography in Wolverhampton. Kathryn has put the show together from a larger body of work from emerging talent and established photographers from across the two groups. The result is a diverse and exciting new body of work seen for the first time here in Birmingham.

Come along - September 3rd to September 18th 2010 – 11am -5.30, Rhubarb East, Custard Factory, Birmingham.

I Am Camera – Boxxed – June 10 -19

Category: PhotospaceLiz Garlinge @ 21:06

Some young Birmingham photographers have collaborated to put on an exciting new group show of their work in a former warehouse in Digbeth.

The show has broad appeal – a variety of photographic styles and techniques and some very exciting new talent in fine art, commercial and fashion photography.

Birmingham photospace admires people who make galleries where there were none – so well done folks. If you’d like to know more about the exhibition do have a look here.

We’ll definitely going along – not least because one of our organising committee (the very talented Matt Murtagh) is one of the 25 photographers exhibiting his work.

I Am Camera
The Wild Building
Floodgate Street
Digbeth
Birmingham

10th – 19th June 2010

They look much better as prints so if you haven’t then please come down to see them in the flesh.

The whole group would like to wish all our supporters a very happy New Year, we’ve got big plans for 2010 and we hope you’d like to be part of them, stay tuned!

Birmingham’s People runs until the end of January at The Drum Arts Centre.

Birmingham’s People – Private View

Category: Photospace,Portraiture,birmingham's peopleLiz Garlinge @ 21:40

Matt Murtagh being interviewedLast night marked the private view of our exhibition at The Drum. We had a great night – to see the portraits up and enjoyed by all our guests was fantastic!

We drank cava, looked at the images, wandered round spotting our sitters – faces so familar to us from the choosing of the images – wandering round looking at themselves on the walls.

We had a lively Q&A with one of our artists, Matt Murtagh – who talked more about working with sitters, his inspirations and how the portraits were taken.

We had a great turnout – a huge thank you to everyone who came along to The Drum on a cold, wet Wednesday – we really enjoyed your company. Thank you also to everyone who helped out in some way – Jane for being a super PR lady par-excellence, Ian for taking some amazing photos (these are two of them – we’ll be putting more up in due course!) and for everyone who made a donation on the night, or this morning via our Paypal button.

Patrick talks to the group The show is up throughout December and January – do pop along to see it – and let us know what you think!

Here at Birmingham Photospace we’ve been incredibly busy organising the exhibition, particularly the private view next week, so much so that we’ve rather fallen behind with our blog posts for which we apologise.

Here’s Diana, a really enthusiastic lady…

Birmingham Photospace is pretty busy at the moment what with our exhibition launching in one weeks time. We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at the private view.

This week has been devoted to trying to get the word out and on Saturday I had the pleasure of being interviewed on BBC WM about Birmingham’s People and the image of Birmingham in general.

Listen on the iPlayer here (from about 20 minutes in!)

edit – will be off the iPlayer tonight so I’ve uploaded the interview as an audioboo here

Birmingham’s People 43 – Mr Williams

Category: PhotospaceLiz Garlinge @ 11:00

I realise I might be accused of being over-interested in facial hair (and with my husband growing a moustache for Movember) there’s quite a lot of it in my life at the moment.

I did choose this portrait to blog because of the excellent facial hair, but on looking at it a bit closer I realised I liked it because I couldn’t work out what Mr Williams was thinking when he had this portrait taken. We’ve seen people looking stern, some friendly and some completely thrilled to be in front of the camera (I’m thinking of you, Mr Wong!) – but I really can’t tell what Mr Williams is thinking.

I guess that’s one of the interesting things about photographs and visual art in general – so much is left up to the viewer. I wonder if we’ll ever get to ask him about this portrait?
