Birmingham’s People – Private View

Category: Photospace,Portraiture,birmingham's peopleLiz Garlinge @ 21:40

Matt Murtagh being interviewedLast night marked the private view of our exhibition at The Drum. We had a great night – to see the portraits up and enjoyed by all our guests was fantastic!

We drank cava, looked at the images, wandered round spotting our sitters – faces so familar to us from the choosing of the images – wandering round looking at themselves on the walls.

We had a lively Q&A with one of our artists, Matt Murtagh – who talked more about working with sitters, his inspirations and how the portraits were taken.

We had a great turnout – a huge thank you to everyone who came along to The Drum on a cold, wet Wednesday – we really enjoyed your company. Thank you also to everyone who helped out in some way – Jane for being a super PR lady par-excellence, Ian for taking some amazing photos (these are two of them – we’ll be putting more up in due course!) and for everyone who made a donation on the night, or this morning via our Paypal button.

Patrick talks to the group The show is up throughout December and January – do pop along to see it – and let us know what you think!

This young woman had a cheeky and lively air to her. Obviously fashion
conscious.

The image captures her to a tee.

Birmingham’s people 24 -Outlaws

Category: Photospace,PortraitureLiz Garlinge @ 09:30

These two lovely ladies are daughter and mother. I know this, because this is my sister-in-law and my mother-in-law. They came down to see my husband (one of our volunteer photo-processors from the day) and I having fun in the tent. We couldn’t spend much time with them because we were rushed off our feet!

They went to the exhibition of prints of the photos in The Council House before they came to see us. My sister-in-law took me to task for the lack of ‘comedy photos’. She claimed everyone was taking themselves seriously, and that we needed some pictures of people pulling faces. I art-directed her shoot – and made her assume poses (a sailor! a catalogue model!) and she participated enthusiastically, making faces for the camera. I do love this photo of her.

Look how friendly and warm my mother-in-law looks! A great photo of a remarkable woman.

Birmingham’s People 22 – The Arnott Family

Throughout the weekend we had family groups who wanted their picture taken, the Arnotts were the most fun.

And also the hardest to keep in shot.

Birmingham’s People 20 – Pete Ashton

Category: Portraiture,birmingham's peopleMatt Murtagh @ 13:24

You probably know Pete Ashton already, blogger, social media consultant (not guru), talented photographer and all round good egg.

Pete and Chris Unitt have recently returned to the reins of seminal Brummie Arts blog Created in Birmingham and we wish them both good luck and success, it’s an essential part of the Birmingham cultural landscape and under their enthusiastic management should go on to new heights.

Over the Artsfest weekend Pete took some wonderful documentary pics of the Birmingham’s People project on his marvellous TTV machine, a wonder of the modern age, his slideshow is embedded below.

Birmingham’s People 19 – Jane Williams

Category: Portraiture,birmingham's peopleMatt Murtagh @ 09:30

Jane was the first portrait sitter of the weekend. She had volunteered to help over the weekend and directed many of the video interviews that accompany some of these portraits.

In her day job she works at the BBC and it was great to have her experience and enthusiasm on board.

We look forward to having the opportunity to work with her again!

Birmingham’s People 18 – Geoff Stevens

Category: Portraiture,birmingham's peopleMatt Murtagh @ 09:30

Geoff Stevens is one of Britain’s most published poets. He’s from West Bromwich and is one of the few local poets to use the Black Country Dialect in his work.

You can find examples of his work on his website.

This was one of my favourite portraits from the weekend, it was taken early on the first day and was the first image to jump out and reassure me that despite photographing in a makeshift tent and under great time restraints we could still get great results.

As well as sitting for us Geoff was kind enough to be interviewed on video. He also gave a reading of one of his poems about Birmingham and it’s possibly my favourite piece of footage from the day.

The interview’s available in HD if you click through to our Vimeo channel.

Birmingham’s People 14 – Martin Phillips

Category: Portraiture,birmingham's peopleMatt Murtagh @ 01:20

In planning Birmingham’s People I wanted to create a convincing portrait of all aspects of Birmingham’s culture and its social history.

One popular image of the Midlands since the 70s has been its reputation as a centre of long haired heavy metal. As soon as I saw Martin I thought he would be perfect to illustrate this portion of Brummie history.

Of course as soon as I talked to him I realised that you can’t pigeon hole anyone so glibly and easily, Martin was as charming a man as you could hope to meet and his portrait is as much about the extraordinarily serene green eyes as his fabulously wild hair.

Birmingham’s People 11 – Afribeanne

Category: Birmingham,Portraiture,birmingham's peopleMatt Murtagh @ 12:19

Afribeanne (on the right in the portrait) is a resident of Brixton and was visiting Birmingham during the Artsfest weekend.

An art student, she had some great insights into the unique nature of photography and the importance of it being part of the community as you can see in the video interview below.

She also had some incredibly positive things to say about the second city, especially its shops!

She was great fun to work with too, picking this relaxed, fun shot rather than a more formal portrait.
